        Future of Seabed Mapping and its associated use by 2025 - IHO & OECD - Monaco, October 2023



        In October 2023, Dr. Virginie Tassin Campanella was invited to be part of small group of international experts specialized in seabed management and mapping to discuss with the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) and OECD - OCDE the future of seabed mapping and its associated uses by 2045.

        This workshop gathered experts from GEBCO - General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans, various Hydrographic Offices around the world, Academia and the private sector.



        Marine Protected Areas and Local Communities - Global Wave Conference - Portugal, October 2023


        Early October, Founder Virginie Tassin Campanella was lucky enough to be invited to deliver a keynote speech on MarineProtectedAreas and local communitied at the GlobalWaveConference in Peniche, Portugal, a conference dedicated to Surf, Sustainability & Innovation.

        This conference, organised by The Surfrider Foundation, together with Save The Waves Coalition, Surfers Against Sewage and WILDCOAST, gathered an impressive line up of surf passionates working in various sectors from #MarineConservation #CoastalProtection #Teaching #History #FilmProduction #Photography #Sport to discuss sustainability, innovation and the protection of the marine space, resources, cultures and lives surrounding seas & oceans.


        Women & the Law of the Sea - ABLOS Conference - IHO - Monaco, October 2023


        At the occasion of the ABLOS Conference, the International Hydrographic Organization invited Dr. Tassin Campanella to act as IHO representative in a panel dedicated to Gender Equalitty in Ocean Science and Governance.

        Dr. Tassin Campanella presented the general framework applicable to the protection of women at sea, as well as broader reflections on the still important discriminations and violence against them in the maritime sector, but also in the practice of public international law, raising particular concerns with the lack of exemplarity of the field in terms of protection and respect of women and diversity. She also discussed briefly the current legal dispute challenges, including the lack of appropriate dispute fora for an effective acess of victim to justice.



        Submarine cables and ocean observation - IFREMER - France, July 2023




        Dr. Tassin Campanella was invited to participate to a GEO Ocean workshop organised in Brest, France, to present legal issues raised by the legal status and use of submarine cables conducting ocean observation activities (incl. SMART cables).

        The workshop mainly gathered scientists, the private sector and public authorities working on seabed research, management and use.



        Sustainable Finance - French Parliament -France, June 2023


        In the legendary Colbert room of the National Assembly, Dr. Virginie Tassin Campanella had the immense honor and pleasure of being invited to moderate the first panel of the annual event of EiC Corporation, international platform for the clubs d' investments and businessangels committed to the development of financial education, the promotion of popular shareholding and the search for financing for innovative companies with high growth potential.

        The panel was dedicated to Renewable energies, decarbonization of the economy: what are the challenges for green and ethical finance?



        Impact and opportunities provided by BBNJ Agreement to Ocean Actors - Ocean Ovation Festival - The Hague - June 2023


        Based on her unique advisory services to private ocean actors, Dr. Tassin Campanella was invited to present the impact of the BBNJ Agreement on ocean activities and related actors, together with business opportunities provided by the prospects of implementation. This presentation was specifically designed for investors and start-ups an emphazised the role of international law as a business added value tool.



        Deep Sea Mining Perspectives in the Pacific - PECC - New Caledonia - June 2023




        At the occasion of the workshop "The deep Sea : State of the Pacific", Dr. Tassin Campanella was invited to present legal issues raised by the deep-sea governance. During her presentation, Dr. Tassin Campanella explained the great difference between the legal regime applicable to deep sea mining within national juridiction, and beyond national jurisdiction, as well as pending questions and important issues of a lack of implementation of UNCLOS and related obligations.

        The workshop, spread over 2 days, gathered leading international experts and actors in deep sea mining, experienced in the Pacific region.



        Biodiversity and the Precautionnary Approach in the Mediterranean Sea, Monaco Ocean Week, March 2023



        Founder Virginie Tassin Campanella was invited to moderate and participate into the first edition of the Legal Roundtable of the Monaco Ocean Week. Together with co-panelists from Portugal, Morocco and Tunisia, Dr. Tassin CAmpanella explored the various definitions, thresholds, and factors related to the precautionary approach, as well as the differences between the precautionary approach and the precautionary principle.  The panel discussed the UNCLOS, Barcelona Convention and its Protocols, Fish Stock Agreement, OSPAR, and BBNJ Agreement. Difficulties related to drafting and implementing the BBNJ Agreement and High Seas Pockets, maritime disputes, ocean data collection, and Marine Scientific Research were also discussed. The importance of understanding law as a tool to prevent disputes, promote implementation, and an instrument of peace was emphasized.


        Management of Plastic Risk, Sustainable Finance Day, Monaco, January 2023


        Founder Virginie Tassin Campanella was invited to conduct a presentation at the second Monaco Sustainable Finance Day, an initiative launched by Gov. Council - Minister of Finance and Economy of Monaco, Mr. Castellini, and sponsored by Lombard Odier Investment Manager.

        In duo with Att. Stéphanie Noël, Dr. Tassin Campanella explained and discussed with leading investors, industrials, foundations and start ups how the legal risk associated with plastic should be addressed, optimized and valued.

        She raised at this occasion the complexity of the legal / policy frameworks; the lack of understanding by most actors of this complexity, the challenges and prospects related to the future UNEP Plastic Treaty, the opportunities to be seized in understanding these issues, and the high added-value of law  to identify business opportunities, measuring impact and strategic positioning, including the issue of sustainability.

        The full content of her presentation was made available, on a free access, through the platform MXP Digital Learning Monaco to promote knowledge learning and certification.


        Law 2.0 Conference, Dubai December 2022


        Founder Virginie Tassin Campanella is invited to attend the Law 2.0 Conference in Dubai this year to speak about legal innovation, the future of the legal profession and global perspectives for the legal sector. It will be the first time that Dr. Tassin Campanella shares her insights and experience on the practice of Public International Law.

        Founder Virginie Tassin Campanella is invited to deliver a presentation related to the regulation of activities on the continental shelf where she focused on the complex interaction in between Law of the Sea and regional seas agreements and new activities on the seabed such as carbon storage. The presentation was delivered in French.

        Founder Virginie Tassin Campanella was invited to the EureKare conference in Monaco to present the state of international law applied to marine synthetic biology (access and use of marine resources, including DNA modified and geo-engineering activities on and above the marine environment).

        Ocean & Women, Monaco March 2022

        At the occasion of International Women's Day on 8 March 2022, the Monaco Women's Rights Committee invited Dr. Tassin Campanella to present and discuss, together with Nathalie Hilmi (Monaco Scientific  Centre) common issues faced by the ocean and women. The event took place at the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco in presence of members of the Government of Monaco.

        Dr. Tassin Campanella was invited to speak in the panel dedicated to "Oceans and Seas: SDG14 and a Smart Future" and presented issues and challenges related to the implementation of SDG14 to a multidisciplinary audience.

        IBDMAR Congress, Brazil 2020


        Dr. Tassin Campanella was invited to speak at the IBDMAR Law of the Sea Congress on the Delimitation of the Extended Continental Shelf and its articulation with the Delineation Procedure. She shared a panel with Prof. Andre de Paiva Toledo & ITLOS Judge Cabello Sarrubi. The event was live on YouTube on 12th November.

        Brazilian Law of the Sea Congress, Brazil 2020

         Dr. Tassin Campanella was invited to speak at the Law of the Sea Brazilian Congress organised by Cedmar-Usp- Centro de Estudos em Direito do Mar "Vicente Marotta Rangel and the Academy of International Law (ABDI). This even is the largest and most traditional law of the sea event in Brazil. Dr. Tassin Campanella will be speaking on the 28th November.

        FAO Sustainable Fishery Symposium, Rome 2019


        Dr. Tassin Campanella was invited to take part of the Symposium dedicated to sustainable fisheries and the Science/Policy nexus.

        Ocean MIT Solve Workshop, Tromso 2019

        Dr. Tassin Campanella was invited to be part of the Ocean MIT Solve Workshop organized during the Arctic Innovation Week. 

        At this occasion, she worked with diverse experts of various fields on Arctic challenges including data sharing, health, climate change and urban development, all related to ocean management issues.

        World Maritime Conference, Shanghai 2019

        Dr. Tassin Campanella was invited to attend the 110th Anniversary of the Shanghai Maritime University and co-chaired the Maritime Law Session of the World Maritime Conference organized during the celebrations. Dr. Tassin Campanella also presented the topic "The impact of the BBNJ Agreement on Maritime Activities" and addressed both upcoming challenges and opportunities for the maritime sectors & actors related to the implementation of the BBNJ Agreement of UNCLOS.

        Ocean Studio Xynteo Exchange, Oslo 2019

        Hosted by Microsoft and DNV GL, Dr. Tassin Campanella was invited to act as Ocean Data Expert in the first Ocean Studio of Xynteo.

        She guided over two days a group of around 15 professionals to address the challenge "Access and Sharing Ocean Data".

        "Operating a Sustainable Shipping Business" - Capacity Building training delivered to the maritime sector of Singapore


        In May 2022, Dr. Virginie Tassin Campanella delivered a 4 days "à la carte" training for small, medium and big enterprise of the maritime sector in Singapore. The training covered Sustainable Development Law, International Maritime Law, Law the Sea, ESG/greenwashing and Sustainable Finance Principles. Designed to be practical, the training included exercises and roundtables with leaders from the Singapore maritime industry and international/regional organisations to discuss multistakeholders partnerships, ocean knowledge & research, and the way the private sector and Singapore can contribute to the sustainable development agenda locally, regionally, and internationally.

        Deepsea Mining: VTA Tassin represents the French IUCN Committee before the French Senate


        In April 2022, Dr. Virginie Tassin Campanella, UICN Legal Expert, represented the French Committee of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature before the French Senate for a hearing on Exploration, Protection and Exploitation of the deep seabed. Many of the arguments raised by Dr. Tassin were mentioned in the final report of the French Senate issued in June 2022.

        Promotion as VP Scientific Council (INDEMER, Monaco)


        Dr. Virginie Tassin Campanella was promoted ,in June 2021, by Royal Ordinance of Prince Albert II of Monaco as Vice President of the Scientific Council of the Economic Law of the Sea Institute (INDEMER) of Monaco.

        Dr. Virginie Tassin Campanella was invited to join the Organizing Comittee of the Law of the Sea Summer Academy of Kadir Has University, joining the original founders, Aslihan Acikel & Louis Savadogo.

        Appointment as Member of Scientific Council (INDEMER, Monaco)

        Dr. Virginie Tassin Campanella was appointed in June 2020 by Royal Ordinance of Prince Albert II of Monaco as a member of the Scientific Council of the Economic Law of the Sea Institute (INDEMER) of Monaco along eminent scholars.

        VTA Tassin acts as member of UNDESA/ Sulitest / Mercator Ocean International Working Group (SDG 14)


        Dr. Tassin Campanella was invited in July 2020 to join an expert group created under the umbrella of partnership between the United Nations Department of Economic & Social Affairs (UNDESA), Sulitest and Mercator Ocean International to design a  free of charge and pluridisciplinary learning module on SDG14.

        Authoring of ITLOS Mooc Case 2020

        Dr. Tassin Campanella was invited to write the 2020 ITLOS Mooc Case which will be run during the next Brazilian Law of the Sea Congress of IBDMAR in November 2020 (online). 

        Entitled "Dispute concerning the fishing practices of Azurius in the EEZ of Calypso in the Stellar Sea" , the case deals with IUU Fishing, Flag State, Due Diligence, State of Necessity and Climate Change.

        ITLOS Judges Elsa Kelly and Oscar Catello Sarubbi will be assessing the work of the international pleading teams.
